Continente buys 14.500 tonnes of oranges from the Algarve

In 2021, Continente will acquire 14.5 thousand tonnes of oranges from the Algarve from national producers, 5% more than in the past, reinforcing the bet on national production and helping the development of the regional economy so affected in the last year due to the pandemic.

In 2020, the brand sold 13.8 thousand tonnes of oranges, contributing to the sustainability and development of the regional economy.

All oranges available at Continente stores are oranges from the Algarve, including the oranges available at the stores’ juice machines. The natural orange juice for sale at BAGGA cafeterias, and their home delivery via BAGGA Delivery, which is squeezed in the moment, uses the same oranges as well. This variety of 'juice' oranges is distinguished by its lack of navel, and beeing sweeter with a high juice content.

The Continente Producers’ Club (CPC), in partnership with its producers, guarantees that the best agricultural practices are used in the orchards of the Algarve, resulting in a fruit of excellence. Continente’s Algarve orange is harvested by hand and at its optimum point of flavour.

The two thousand acres of orchards are distributed between Tavira and Silves and belong to about 100 producers that make up the four Producers’ Organizations that are Continente Producers’ Club’s Members. Algarve oranges have PGI certification - Protected Geographical Indication - which certifies that the product has a certain quality, reputation or other characteristics that can be essentially attributed to its geographical origin.

Ondina Afonso, Continente Producers’ Club’s President, says that “the security we feel in relation to the quality of the Algarve oranges produced by our producers, allowed us to diversify the offer through the availability of Algarve orange juice in our stores, precisely at a time when our customers are looking for food that can boost their immunity”.

Continente, through the technicians of the Producers' Club, works daily with national producers, investigating and selecting the best products to meet the needs of its customers.
Sales of Portuguese products in Continente stores have been progressively increasing, with more than 160 thousand tonnes of agrifood goods being acquired in the last year, including exclusive products of certified origin such as oranges from the Algarve, apples from Alcobaça and Beira Alta or the West “rocha” pear.
