Continente makes its debut in the sale of insect-based food products

Continente is the first national retail brand to sell insect-based food products, after the General Directorate of Food and Veterinary Medicine (DGAV) authorized the consumption of seven insect species in the country.

As of today, customers can find in 10 Continente stores, which feature Food Lab corners, Tenebrio molitor sold in snacks, protein bars and flour, by the national producer ‘Portugal Bugs’, with prices ranging between €1.79 and €9.95.

Investment in innovative products is a constant bet from Continente. We intend to publicize new products and make customers aware of the benefits of healthy and sustainable eating, promoting, whenever possible, national products. We expect a reaction of great interest from our Customers. The Portuguese have been changing their diet habits and that can be seen in the change in consumption patterns. The consumption of insects is a global trend, with very interesting nutritional properties and lower production costs, in addition to reducing the environmental impact”, explains Paula Jordão, Commercial Director at Sonae MC.

‘Tasty Mealworms’ snacks are dehydrated insects seasoned with cayenne pepper or sea salt, rich in protein and a source of fiber. In addition to being a quick, practical and nutritious snack, these can be added as a topping in salads, soups and pastas.

The protein bars – ‘Mealworm Bites’ - are made from 100% natural ingredients and are a source of protein and rich in fiber. Available in chocolate and almond; fig and orange; Apple and cinnamon; and peanut butter and honey flavours.

The flour, made 100% from Tenebrio molitor, is rich in protein and a source of fiber and can be used to enrich bread, biscuits, cakes, pancakes and smoothies recipes.

Insects, consumed by about a third of the world's population, constitute a sustainable protein source, are rich in fiber, vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids. Note that these products may cause allergic reactions in consumers with a known allergy to shellfish (and shellfish products) as well as to dust mites. When compared to other animal protein sources, insect production has a lower environmental impact due to a smaller water footprint, less greenhouse gas emissions, less feed consumption and less demand for fertile soil.

Produced by ‘Portugal Bugs’, a startup company, headquartered in Matosinhos, these products have the ‘Continente Food Lab’ pioneer seal in Portugal, a project that makes it easy to disseminate the most innovative items and new global food trends to Continente customers. ‘Continente Food Lab’ products are launched from an experimental and dynamic perspective, in which customer feedback is crucial for them to remain in the stores.
