Continente sells Rapid COVID-19 Diagnostic Tests

Continente stores will start selling, as of today, rapid COVID-19 diagnostic tests, in order to help their customers in the diagnosis of the infectious disease caused by coronavirus, thus helping to control the spread of the virus in Portugal.

The antigen tests are manufactured by Genrui Biotech and detect the Coronavirus 2 (SARS-Cov-2) Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome N protein’s antigen by a nasal swab. The tests can be purchased at all Continente stores across the country – Continente, Modelo and Bom Dia - for a price of €2.79 (box of 1 unit).

The test, simple to operate, safe and effective, is suitable for non-professional home use and is applicable to all individuals with suspected SARS-CoV-2 infection. The test kit can be stored between 2°C and 30°C and is valid for 18 months as long as the aluminium pouch remains sealed. The test result is displayed within 15 minutes.

With more than 300 stores across the country, Continente intends to contribute to the protection of public health by providing self-diagnostic tests, according to Decree-Law No. 60-A/2021 of July 15th, 2021, which allows the sale of these tests in supermarkets and hypermarkets.

The test uses samples from the internal nasal area, which makes this procedure simpler and less invasive, and it is essential to strictly follow all instructions for use. Validated by Infarmed, the test can be performed by people of any age, including children, and its sale is only allowed to people over 18 years of age.

According to the indications shared by APIFARMA (Portuguese Association of Pharmaceutical Industry) Rapid Antigen Tests can be used within the first 5 days of symptoms (inclusive), in patients with symptoms and with hospitalization criteria, due to unavailability of molecular tests and/or that do not show results in a timely manner and also for patients without symptoms and who had a high-risk contact (close contact with a patient infected with COVID-19), due to the unavailability of molecular tests and/or that do not show results in a timely manner.

Following the recommendation of the General Directorate of Health, symptomatic individuals or those who had contact with confirmed cases should contact the SNS24 Contact Centre (808 24 24 24) regardless of the test result.

Individuals with a positive or inconclusive result should also contact the SNS24 Contact Centre (808 24 24 24). In case of negative result, all protection measures must be maintained, such as the use of a mask, hand sanitation and social distance. Negative results must be reported in an electronic form, available at https://covid19.min-saude.pt/, as they are equally important for monitoring the national testing activity.
