CONTINENTE RELEASES NEW ‘KING CAKE’ FLAVOURS
‘King Cake’ is part of the Portuguese families’ Christmas tradition and, on Continente, there are 11 different flavours available, which will please all tastes. Raspberry and Blueberry King Cake, Pistachio and Pomegranate King Cake, fig-leaf squash and Egg King Cake and Chestnut King Cake are some of the Christmas pastries’ new flavours that customers can find in Continente stores, with exclusive recipes and combinations that combine tradition with innovation.
Developed by national suppliers, exclusively for Continente stores, the brand’s Christmas range is a seasonal offer characterized by the quality of its products. It’s also the perfect gift to share with family and friends over the Christmas season.
The Pistachio and Pomegranate King Cake, a limited edition, with a refined and delicate appearance, stands out for the pistachio and pomegranate’s vibrant colours and for the unique flavours and textures. The Raspberry and Blueberry King Cake is a crown-shaped cake with a fresh flavour, due to the raspberries and blueberries combination. The fig-leaf squash and Egg King Cake combines sweet egg strands (Portuguese angel hair) with a dough flavoured by raisins and dried nuts, involving the traditional fig-leaf squash. The Chestnut King Cake has a brioche dough texture and stands out for its intense chestnut puree flavour, with a touch of aniseed liqueur, fortified wine, cinnamon and cocoa.
This cake is adorned with whole chestnuts and, inside, the crunchiness of whole almonds stands out.
These new flavours now join the already well-known Chocolate and Hazelnut King Cake, with a soft and fluffy textured dough, and the Apple King Cake, with a texture slightly moistened by the presence of jam and apple pieces inside.
Continente’s Christmas pastry also includes more traditional flavours such as Continente Seleção’s King Cake, Queen Cake and ‘Flooded’ King and Queen Cakes. The Continente Seleção King Cake has a rich, fluffy and aromatic dough, enriched with roasted nuts and candied fruit. The Queen Cake incorporates roasted nuts, fig-leaf squash jam and raisins and is flavoured with port wine, rum and orange. It is topped with walnuts, hazelnuts and chopped almonds.
The ‘Flooded’ King Cake has the characteristic flavour of the King Cake dough, with the traditional dried nuts and candied fruits, but also the creaminess of custard. It is characterized by its rectangular and crude shape. The ‘Flooded’ Queen Cake has a soft and fluffy texture, with all the taste of a king cake, and is enriched with egg cream, dried nuts and fig-leaf squash jam and also stands out for its crude shape and dried nuts topping.
The range is made up of 11 different references, with prices ranging from €5.99 to €9.99.
“On Continente, we always like to surprise our customers with novelties that combine the Christmas season’s tradition with innovation, without neglecting the highest quality. Our concern is offering products that stand out for their unique and original taste, but we also favour the more traditional flavours”, says Catarina Simões, Director of Continente’s Bakery and Pastry Business Unit.
In addition to king and queen cakes, the Christmas pastry also includes Continente’s sponge cake family, which grow this year. In addition to the traditional sponge cake and Continente Seleção’s moist sponge cake, two new flavours are now added: chocolate moist sponge cake and salted caramel moist sponge cake. Handmade, and according to a traditional recipe, it is a sweet cake with a soft and creamy texture, ideal for this festive season.
