Missão Continente delivers € 30,000 to volunteer firefighters

Missão Continente delivered today a check for 30 thousand euros, raised from the sale of the 1st edition of the solidarity shopping bag, to the Portuguese Association of Voluntary Firefighters (APBV), for the purchase of External Automatic Defibrillators (EADs).

Since August 1st, 60 thousand solidarity bags have been sold, in all 41 Continente stores in the country, with a price of € 1, where half of the amount (0.50 €) reverted to the Portuguese Association of Volunteer Firefighters who, not only were at the forefront in the fight against COVID-19, as they work all year to serve the population.

With the messages “This bag has a Mission” and “For great causes, great missions”, the reusable and recyclable raffia bags included a label that explains that APBV, since 2005, in partnership with several entities, helps to protect hundreds of firefighters, assigning them with personal protective equipment for the missions they face, daily, saving lives and defending our heritage.

João Jordão Marques, President of the APBV’s Board, said that “this donation from Missão Continente is very important for saving lives in Portugal. After analysing the needs of the Portuguese fire brigades, we identified the need for EADs at a national level. Thus, we will be able to distribute 25 EADs and all districts will be covered, including the autonomous regions, which will make a difference in aid in Portugal. There was still a lot of weakness in this area and that is why it is an important contribution from Continente and one that fills us with pride. Our thanks also go out to the Portuguese people who joined this initiative in a massive way.”

By the end of the year, Missão Continente’s team will launch more special editions of solidarity and sustainable bags, to help other social support institutions. At this moment, the sale of the 2nd edition of solidarity bags is taking place, to support Animalife.

This is yet another initiative by Missão Continente to help different segments of the community - firefighters, animals, families in vulnerable situations -, seeking to promote well-being and sustainable social development throughout the country.
