This year, Continente reinforced the purchase of seasonal fruit from national producers, namely West ‘Rocha’ Pear, Red Globe Grape, Golden Apple and Alcobaça’s Gala Apple, by more than 14 million kg.

The brand bought 690 thousand kg of red globe grapes from Ribatejo’s national producers, which means an increase of 55% compared to the same period last year. These grape varieties are sold during late summer and must be kept in the fridge.

Continente also acquired 5.9 million kg of ‘Rocha’ Pear from the West PDO, an exclusively Portuguese variety, which is characterized by its white pulp and firm texture, and for being sweet, crunchy and juicy.

The Alcobaça Gala apple, for sale from September until April, is all acquired from national producers of the Alcobaça Apple’s PDO, and Continente acquired 5.6 million kg of it.

Coming from Beira Alta’s PGI, PDO Apple from Alcobaça, Alentejo and Trás-Os-Montes, the Golden Apple is sold from September until May, and Continente bought 2.7 million kg of it from the CPC.

The PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) and PGI (Protected Geographical Indication) fruits enhance the connection to the production area and local production systems and, simultaneously, guarantee certification systems geared towards environmental sustainability and excellence in the quality of products.

Continente has been investing in the purchase of fresh products from the Continente Producers Club (CPC), namely Red Globe Grape, West ‘Rocha’ Pear, Golden Apple and Alcobaça’s Gala Apple, which are at the optimum point of consumption at this time of year.

“Our fruits and vegetables reach us at the Flavour of Nature” is the concept of the campaign dedicated to Continente’s fresh products, and which is on air throughout the year, reinforcing that the national fruits and vegetables for sale in Continente stores are always great for consumption, that is, when they are tastier and with better quality. In addition, the fact that they are produced locally, contributes to more sustainable food systems, through short supply chains and development of the local and regional economy.

In 2020, through the Continente Producers Club, Sonae MC purchased 206 thousand tonnes of products from national production, with a total value of 365 million euros, which represents a growth of 28% compared to the tonnes purchased in 2019.

The Continente Producers Club’s goal is to make national products of excellence available to customers, resulting from a partnership work with producers, supported by technical-scientific knowledge and which aligns the offer with consumer trends. The Club is also committed to supporting local production, to small-scale producers, managing to supply some stores in the Continente retail chain, translating into an offer of “Products of the Region”.
