Sonae and MC lead the fight against climate change worldwide, according to the CDP

The CDP gave the two companies the highest rating in its ranking, highlighting transparency and performance in the fight against climate change.

Sonae and MC were distinguished for their leadership in the fight against climate change by the CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project). The global non-profit environmental organization included the two companies in its “A-List”, which groups the companies with the best performance and transparency worldwide.

The assessment, carried out by the CDP, scored more than 23 thousand companies around the world, with only around 1% recording Sonae and MC’s level of excellence. The two companies then reach the “A” level of the organization that holds the largest environmental database in the world, having entered the exclusive list of leading companies.

João Günther Amaral, Sonae’s executive director, states: “The fight against climate change is urgent and is already part of our way of doing business. We remain focused on our commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2040 and our role in driving the climate transition. This positive and double result is a very important recognition, coming from the entity that is the global reference in this evaluation and that places us on the same level of excellence as the giants of the world’s economy”.

According to Isabel Barros, MC’s Executive Administrator “The involvement of our teams in the design and implementation of MC’s Decarbonisation Operations Roadmap allowed us to achieve, last year, a 34% reduction in emissions compared to 2018. A result that we challenged with the establishment of new targets aligned with climate science and validated by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi). Therefore, in 2023, we reviewed our ambition and committed to a 51% reduction in emissions from our operations by 2032, compared to 2022, and a 31% reduction in emissions from our supply chain”.

Sonae, as an active portfolio manager, guides its companies to understand the impacts on their value chain, define action plans and ambitious goals aligned with science. The achieved results reflect Sonae and MC’s commitment to the sustainable development of their businesses and are the result of active environmental sustainability policies.

Among the actions developed by Sonae and MC are: energy efficiency measures with an impact on energy consumption and reducing dependence on fossil fuels, through the increase of their own energy production using renewable sources and purchasing it from different suppliers with lower emissions levels; the decarbonisation of their fleet; fighting waste and single-use materials; promoting recycling; water saving; forest regeneration; investing in circular services; and, reducing the consumption of natural resources.

The CDP’s scores are widely used to guide investment and purchasing decisions towards a zero-carbon, sustainable and resilient economy. In 2023, more than 740 financial institutions with more than $136 billion in assets asked companies to disclose data on environmental impacts, risks and opportunities through the CDP platform. A record number of 23,000 companies responded. The CDP uses a detailed and independent methodology to evaluate these companies, assigning a score from A to D - based on the comprehensiveness of disclosure, awareness and management of environmental risks and demonstration of best practices associated with environmental leadership, such as setting ambitious and significant targets.

Sherry Madera, CDP’s CEO, states: “Earning a spot on the A-List is about more than just scores. It is an indication of complete, high-quality data that provides companies with a holistic view of their environmental impact, serves as a basis for transition plans and – crucially – enables them to realize their ambitions.
