According to data released by Nielsen (2022), there are around 2.5 million cats and 2 million dogs in Portugal, with 65% of families residing in Portugal having a pet, and the demand for food for cats and dogs is mainly carried out in large surfaces, such as supermarkets (more than 50%).

In this segment, among the most sought after products in Continente stores, the hygiene products stand out, namely the new Continente cologne for dogs and cats, with oatmeal fragrance, alcohol-free, paraben-free and neutral pH, adaptable to the animal’s skin and with a RRP of €3.99.

Animals are increasingly part of the family and the concern for their well-being intensifies the search for more natural food alternatives, such as Continente’s exclusive brands, ‘Uppy’ and ‘Harper & Bone’.

Recommended by veterinarians and specialists, all of Uppy’s food is hypoallergenic, thus reducing the possibility of animals developing allergies or food intolerances. It is for sale exclusively in all Continente and Continente Online stores, with discounts of up to 35% on their recommended price during the fair. The new exclusive brand, Harper & Bone, features products made only with fresh, natural ingredients and is available in all Continente and Continente Online stores.

Continente Seleção’s wet dog food is another new product this year, presenting reformulated recipes that incorporate fresh meat, in the beef and tuna varieties, with a low cereal content and made only with natural ingredients. In an innovative format, the Tetra Pack proves to be more practical and convenient, with a RRP of €1.99.

In order to ensure a value proposition for customers looking for products with a more affordable price per kilo, the brand offers savings packs, in larger formats, and covering different animal needs, whether for dogs, cats, in dry format, wet or snacks and even absorbents.

Also highlighted is the Ultra Clumping Litter for cats, featuring high absorption and odour neutralization capacity, rated 6.8/7 in quality by cat owners, and with an RRP of €13.99/unit (15L).

For small dogs, there is a complete offer of differentiated food, more energetic and with a higher level of protein, to cope with their fast metabolism and adjusted to their small jaw size.

Also noteworthy is the variety of accessories and products for pet walks, comfort and hygiene, with discounts of up to 25% throughout the fair. Also in Continente stores there is a new range of toys and other accessories from the ‘Karlie’ brand, with toys starting at €1.99.

Continente wants to keep meeting the needs of its customers, with prices and promotions for everyone, with a diverse range of products for pets, reinforcing its leadership position in value and volume in the Petfood & Care market,” says Rosário Almeida, PetFood & Care Commercial Directorate Category Leader at MC.

In addition to promotional offers throughout the year for our four-legged friends, Continente has contributed to the animal cause through various partners and initiatives: “in addition to daily donations – in the 1st half of 2023, Missão Continente donated 15.3 million euros in food and non-food surpluses to 1,049 institutions across the country, including animal welfare. Continente promotes several solidarity campaigns throughout the year for Animalife, a national non-profit association that fights pet abandonment, and several other local associations”, says MC’s official.

Sales of the second Missão Continente solidarity bag from the 2023 Collection, reusable and made from plastic bottles, with the message “We care with affection”, went to PRAVI, to the Portuguese Animal Rights League, to the Street Animals Association and to Animalife. The support intends to support projects linked to the rescue, feeding and treatment of abandoned or mistreated animals, especially during the summer, when these cases increase.
