MISSÃO CONTINENTE DONATED 23.1 MILLION EUROS IN SURPLUS UNTIL SEPTEMBER
In the first nine months of 2023, Missão Continente donated 23.1 million euros in food and non-food products to social solidarity and animal support institutions across the country. In food surpluses alone, this support totalled 20 million euros, the equivalent of more than 5.8 million saved meals (5,839,908 meals). Between July and September, 1020 institutions benefited from this programme, thus avoiding tonnes of food waste during this time period.
In addition to regular donations to institutions, Missão Continente also makes food available to its employees for consumption in the MC’s stores and warehouses’ social areas.
Donated items are considered surplus when they lose their commercial character, but preserve all the necessary conditions for safe consumption, avoiding food waste in a circular economy logic. They include fresh products such as fruit, grocery, vegetables and bakery items, among other food items.
Food waste is a challenge in which Continente, as a retailer, plays a fundamental role. In addition to setting an example, the company encourages consumers, employees and suppliers to play an active role in this effort, which is everyone’s responsibility. Continente’s goal is to minimize the waste of any food that is ready to be consumed, speeding up the flow of products and avoiding tonnes of waste.

Currently, all Continente stores have partnerships with various social solidarity and animal support institutions and donations take place daily, throughout the year.
