CONTINENTE RECOVERS ‘AUTO-PALACE’ BUILDING IN RATO
MC rehabilitated the mythical ‘Auto-Palace’ building, located near Rato, in Lisbon, with an investment of 4.5 million euros, allowing the restoration of the entire historic iron and glass front on this Public Interest Property, built in beginning of the 20th century.
Customers of the new Continente Bom Dia Largo do Rato store, which opened today in that location, will be able to admire the art nouveau stained glass windows commissioned in 1907, from the painter and master stained glass artist Cláudio Martins, and which adorned, on the 2nd floor, the reading hall and the management office of the old automobile cathedral, in Lisbon. MC also recovered the stained glass windows, which feature a car theme, framed by a tangle of floral motifs.

The new Continente store, featuring around 1000 m2, creates 36 jobs in the region and reinforces the presence of Continente Bom Dia’s proximity stores, in Lisbon. Open daily from 8 am to 10 pm, the store offers cafeteria, bakery and take-away services, has 37 parking spaces, 4 for electric vehicles and 10 cashiers, including 6 Self-Checkouts, for more autonomous purchasing.
For the Store Director, Samuel Chaves, who has been at MC for 16 years, “this is another of Continente’s commitments to the rehabilitation of buildings that are part of the city of Lisbon’s history. We want to be even closer to our customers and this is a way of ‘giving back’ the city’s heritage to its inhabitants and visitors, so that they can enjoy the space, at the same time as they do their shopping”.
To highlight its arrival in the region, Missão Continente gifted shopping carts filled with essential goods to the institutions sponsored by the new store: ‘AVA - Associação Vida Autónoma’ (Autonomous Life Association); ‘Centro Popular D’Espie Miranda’ (Popular Centre); ‘Casa da Estrela’ - Youth Promotion Centre; and Animallife. Missão Continente will permanently support these institutions, through the daily food surplus from the new store.
The brand also opened today a new store in Lisbon, on Rua de Arroios, featuring 200 m2 and 9 employees, which aims to respond to the needs of customers in this capital’s neighbourhood.
The opening of Continente Bom Dia Largo do Rato and Continente Bom Dia Arroios starts with a 10% discount on Continente Card campaign, between the 9th and 12th of November, which accumulates with current promotions.
In terms of environmental sustainability, the stores feature 100% LED low consumption light bulbs for lighting, equipment to control and reduce excessive water consumption and containers where customers can deposit used batteries and cork stoppers, which will later be taken away for recycling.
There are currently more than 150 Continente Bom Dia stores in Portugal, where around 7000 people work.
