CONTINENTE OPENS 16TH STORE IN MADEIRA
Continente opened its 16th store in Madeira today, reinforcing the brand’s commitment to the region and creating 70 new jobs. The ceremony was attended by the President of the Regional Government of Madeira, Miguel Albuquerque, the Regional Secretary for Agriculture and Rural Development, Humberto Vasconcelos, the Regional Secretary for Economy, Rui Barreto, the President of the Funchal City Council, Pedro Calado, the Regional Director of Economy and Transport, Isabel Catarina, the CEO of MC, Luís Moutinho, the Administrator of MC’s operations, José Fortunato, the Director of the Continente Modelo Brand, Fernando Silva and the Director of Continente’s Operations in Madeira, José Carlos Salvado .
Located in the São Lucas Building, on Estrada Monumental, in Funchal, the new Continente Modelo Monumental, featuring 1450 m2 of sales area, represents an investment of more than 4 million euros.

The new store is open daily from 8 am to 10 pm and offers cafeteria, bakery and take-away services, as well as a Wells’ store. Continente Modelo Monumental has 110 parking spaces and 13 cashiers, including 7 Self-Checkouts, for more autonomous purchasing.
With this new store, Continente now has 16 commercial spaces in the Autonomous Region of Madeira and opens the 7th store in the Municipality of Funchal. The brand also has a logistics warehouse, which facilitates supply to the Region.
The Inauguration of the Continente Modelo Monumental begins with a 10% discount on Continente Card campaign, between the 14th and 17th of September, which accumulates with current promotions.
To mark its arrival in the region, Missão Continente gifted shopping carts filled with essential goods to the institutions sponsored by the new store: ‘São José’s Cultural and Sports Centre Association’; ‘Food Bank Against Hunger’ in Madeira; ‘Cecília Zino Foundation’ and ‘SPAD - Society for the Protection of Domestic Animals of Funchal’. These institutions will be permanently supported by Missão Continente, through the new Continente Modelo Monumental store’s daily food surpluses.
“We want to continue to value Madeiran products and work increasingly closely with regional producers. We have counted on the support of the Regional Government of Madeira to jointly develop regional agriculture. Continente wants to keep being a trusted brand for everyone, standing out and differentiating itself in food retail, and this opening and the various activities we carry out in Madeira throughout the year aim to reinforce this connection,” explained the CEO of MC, Luís Moutinho.
For Continente’s Director of Operations in Madeira, José Carlos Salvado “this is another of Continente’s bets in the region. A plan to remodel store spaces is underway, which represents a strong investment to adapt them to the best that is done nationally and internationally in food retail. We have sought to make these investments in the region, with local companies, in order to contribute to a circular economy beneficial to everyone”.
In terms of environmental sustainability, the store features 100% LED light bulbs for energy-saving lighting, and control equipment to reduce excessive water consumption as well as containers where customers can deposit used batteries and cork stoppers, which will later be taken away for recycling.
The Continente brand has been present in Madeira since 1996 and currently promotes 1,150 jobs with the support of 80 local producers who supply the stores. In the region, Continente supports 36 social institutions on a daily basis.
