‘PRESENTES À MESA’ DONATES MORE THAN 1 MILLION EUROS TO MORE THAN 330 INSTITUTIONS

Missão Continente’s “Presentes à Mesa” (Gifts at the Table) Christmas campaign raised, with the help of its customers, more than 1 million euros. This amount will help the Food Emergency Network as well as 330 institutions across the country that work locally in the fight against hunger and poverty.

The campaign that started on the 13th of November last, World Kindness Day, and ended on the 8th of January, ran in all the Continente, Continente Modelo, Continente Bom Dia and Continente Online stores, through the sale of 1 and 5 euros solidarity vouchers.

The amount raised by each store will now be divided between the national institution - the Food Emergency Network - and a local institution supported by each store. This is a way for customers to support an institution on a national scale, but also a local and proximity institution, contributing directly to their community.

This year we mark 20 years of activity by Missão Continente and, once again, we reached extraordinary amounts that will guarantee that thousands of families are able to subsist on what is essential – food. We will remain focused on always being by the side of those most in need, acting quickly to fight social emergency situations, and always hand in hand with our customers and colleagues at the stores who, on a daily basis, make known the best of what Missão Continente does for the communities where we operate. We deeply appreciate the trust of all customers in our causes and the contribution of each one to the success of these initiatives. Being able to support the Food Emergency Network and 330 institutions across the country represents the strong connection we have and will maintain with all our customers, partners and institutions in Portugal”, says Nádia Reis, Communication and Social Responsibility Director at Continente.

The Food Emergency Network is a response based on Food Banks, with nationwide coverage, whose mission is to support thousands of vulnerable people and families, by handing out basic non-perishable food items.

Having partners such as Missão Continente, which, with true responsibility, mobilizes its customers for a campaign aimed at promoting active solidarity in reducing food needs, is essential for the Food Emergency Network, which, in this way, ensures many families, throughout the national territory, the food they need, through Food Banks. At this very difficult time, where the impact of price increases on essential products, energy and interest rates hits lower-income families with greater relevance, it is important to highlight Continente’s solidarity as well as the way in which it encouraged so many people not to stay indifferent and contribute, in an easy way, to bring food to the tables of people who, in their region, cannot guarantee it. We express our deep gratitude to all those who contributed to the “Presentes à Mesa” campaign and to Continente for the mobilization carried out”, declares Isabel Jonet, President of the Portuguese Federation of Food Banks.

The 330 institutions identified share the objective of fighting hunger and poverty and were selected directly by the stores, taking into account their existing partnership with Missão Continente (among other criteria).

Missão Continente’s solidarity campaign had as partners the Portuguese Football Federation, the Portuguese Nutrition Association and the National School of Public Health.
