MISSÃO CONTINENTE HAS DONATED AROUND 20 MILLION EUROS IN FOOD SURPLUS

During the first nine months of the year, Missão Continente has donated food products, worth around 20 million euros, to 1,064 institutions across the country. This support is equivalent to more than 10 million saved meals.

In addition to the donations to institutions, the company makes food available to employees through MC’s stores and warehouses’ social areas, which represented the reuse of 3.2 million euros worth of food during the first nine months of 2022.

Donated items are considered surplus when they lose their commercial character, but preserve all the necessary conditions for safe consumption, thus avoiding food waste in a circular economy logic. These include fresh produce such as fruit, vegetables, groceries and bakery items, among other food goods.

For 20 years, Missão Continente has sought to contribute to the population’s well-being. The daily donations we hand over to several hundred institutions allow us, on the one hand, to prevent tonnes of food from becoming waste and, on the other hand, to provide very relevant support to thousands of families. Our responsibility, as an active agent, is to create positive social value among the communities we support”, explains Nádia Reis, Communication and Social Responsibility Director at Continente.

Missão Continente represents Continente’s social responsibility initiatives, such as Community Support, Inclusive Development and Environmental Citizenship, thus wanting to contribute to a more sustainable future.
