GOODBAGS ARE BACK IN CONTINENTE STORES

After having sold out in just over 3 months, the ‘goodbag’ shopping bags, which feature an embedded mini-chip that helps the planet each time they are reused, are once again available for sale, but this time, in all Continente stores. In June last year, these bags, that were available for sale at 70 Continente stores, allowed the planting of 12,655 trees and the collection of the equivalent of 59,910 plastic bags from the ocean.

For each ‘goodbag’ purchased, a tree is planted in the customer’s name, and also plastic is collected from the ocean every time you use these bags when shopping. The eco-friendly expressions “Less is more”, “Think outside the bag” and “0% plastic, 100% fantastic” are the motto of these bags, which sell for €5.00 each and can be reused in the participating stores.

After purchasing each ‘goodbag’, the customer must access the app, which has the same name (free, available for Android and iOS), activate the QR code on the tag and ‘redeem’ the first reward: plant a tree. After that, and for every time the customer uses their ‘goodbag’ when shopping (at a participating store), they just need to run the app, swipe their mobile phone through the mini-chip embedded in the bag (which scans it, using NFC technology) and thus guarantee that another plastic bag is collected from the ocean. In the app, in addition to an interactive map of the participating stores, the number of reuses of the ‘goodbag’ is also recorded, that is, how many times each user has contributed to a cleaner ocean.

If the customer does not have a smartphone with NFC technology (or simply does not want to download the app), when shopping at Continente and using the bag, they can just ask the cashier to register the reuse, and ‘goodbag’ guarantees the collection of plastic from the ocean as if the customer scanned the app.

Planting trees and cleaning the oceans is guaranteed by ‘Weforest’ and ‘One Earth One Ocean’, NGOs dedicated to protecting the planet and to which ‘goodbag’ has partnered.

Continente has been implementing several measures within the scope of its Strategy for the Responsible Use of Plastics, focusing on the development of very specific solutions for a more responsible use of this material, from its private label level, logistics, suppliers, to the internal level and also focusing on consumer awareness.
