Continente opens store on Rua Gomes Freire
Sonae MC has just opened the new Continente Bom Dia store, at Rua Gomes Freire, in Lisbon, with a 100% free of disposable plastic Fruit and Vegetable area, a measure that strengthens the brand’s positioning within the Responsible Plastic Commitment.
As an alternative to single-use plastic bags, customers of the new Continente Bom Dia store will be able to use, in the Fruits and Vegetables section, paper bags (which support up to 2.5 kg) available free of charge, reusable and washable cotton bags (€ 3 / unit) or polyester bags (€ 1.50 / pack of two), or bring their own bags from home. Also noteworthy is the fact that, in this specific space, there is no food packaged in plastic.
Continente Bom Dia Gomes Freire, with around 400 m2 of sales area, will create 14 jobs and guarantees all safety rules to protect both customers and employees.
This opening reinforces the brand’s bet in the Lisbon district, which has 64 Continente spaces, and this being the third store of the brand in Lisbon to adopt the single-use-plastic free policy, after the Continente Modelo Alta de Lisboa store and the Continente Bom Dia Martim Moniz store.
The opening of the space is marked with a 10% discount on Continente Card campaign, in the entire store, between the 4th and 6th of December.
The new proximity store is focused on promoting convenience and ease of purchase among people who go through Rua Gomes Freire daily and offers a range with thousands of products, including those of Continente’s private label and the brands that usually make up the basket of Portuguese choices.
By assuming itself as the first Portuguese food retailer to respond to the Decree-Law no. 351 / XIII which prohibits disposable plastic bags and plastic containers for fruits and vegetables from 2023, Continente consolidates its reference position in sustainability issues as a dynamic player throughout the value chain.
Continente's commitment is to anticipate, by 2025, the ambition defined by the European Union for 2030, reducing (or even eliminating when possible) the use of plastic materials of fossil origin, with regard to private label products, ensuring that they all have reusable, recyclable or compostable packaging.
