Missão Continente supports Vila do Conde’s families
In order to aid vulnerable families, the Municipality of Vila do Conde is ensuring the delivery of food and hygiene shopping baskets, filled with products donated by Missão Continente, through their local store, the Vila do Conde’s Continente Modelo.
Because of the pandemic, many of the municipality’s citizens saw their professional and economic situations change and are relying on the solidarity movements that have emerged, as is the case with this donation of essential grocery products - such as rice, pasta, sugar, canned food, dried legumes, olive oil, quince paste, etc. -, and hygiene and cleaning products - shampoo, shower gel, toothpaste, deodorant, toilet paper, bleach, etc. - which is being promoted by the City Council.
This way, the donation of more than 1,300 items by Missão Continente, will help 1,000 families from Vila do Conde.
Since the arrival of the new coronavirus in Portugal, Missão Continente has responded to several requests for support, distributing thousands of food, hygiene and personal protective equipment (PPE) items to dozens of entities including hospitals, municipalities and solidarity institutions, with the aim of helping not only the most vulnerable and in a situation of illness, but also health professionals and security forces who remain at the frontline in the fight against COVID-19.
In addition to the requests that arrive because of the exceptional situation the country is experiencing, Missão Continente maintains the usual daily donations of surplus from its stores to more than 1,000 social solidarity and animal support institutions, from north to south of the continental territory and islands, contributing to minimize the needs of each institution.
In 2019, Missão Continente donated a total of 12.3 million in food surpluses, of which 8.5 million were delivered to 1,013 social solidarity and animal support institutions throughout the country and the rest distributed internally in the stores’ and warehouses’ social areas.
