Madeira’s institutions have already received over €180.000

This year, between January and March, Missão Continente donated 186 thousand euros in food surpluses to 31 institutions in Madeira, through the region’s Continente stores. This support was divided between 27 social solidarity institutions and 4 animal support and welfare associations.

In addition to the donations to institutions, food items are also made available daily to employees in the MC stores and warehouses’ social areas, which, last year, represented the reuse of 2.2 million euros in food items.

The donated items are considered surplus when they lose their commercial character, but preserve all the necessary conditions for safe consumption, thus avoiding food waste in a circular economy logic. These include fresh produce such as fruit, groceries and bakery items, among other food items.

Missão Continente is aware of its responsibility as an active agent in creating a positive impact on the communities it supports. These daily donations allow, on the one hand, to prevent many tonnes of food from becoming waste and, on the other hand, to support a significant number of institutions and families with food items that are in excellent consumption conditions” explains José Carlos Salvado, Madeira’s Continente Operations Director.

Missão Continente represents Continente’s social responsibility initiatives, such as Community Support, Inclusive Development and Environmental Citizenship, with the aim of contributing to a more sustainable future. Its axes of action are Food, People and the Planet.
