The result was the \u2018Continente Sele\u00e7\u00e3o Alcoba\u00e7a Apple Cider Vinegar\u2019, produced from fresh apple juice, with the PGI certification seal. This vinegar\u2019s first batch allowed avoiding wasting 50 tonnes of fruit and producing 30,000 litters of vinegar.<\/strong>\r\n\r\nContinente Sele\u00e7\u00e3o\u2019s Alcoba\u00e7a Apple Cider Vinegar is produced by blending selected apple varieties, including \u2018Casa Nova\u2019, \u2018Golden Delicious\u2019, \u2018Red Delicious\u2019, \u2018Royal Gala\u2019, \u2018Fuji\u2019, \u2018Granny Smith\u2019, \u2018Jonagold\u2019, \u2018Reineta\u2019 and \u2018Pink\u2019, which gives the vinegar a unique identity and flavour.\r\n\r\nOndina Afonso, Continente Producers Club\u2019s President, explains, \u201c<em>The project began through an initiative by the Continente Producers Club, the \u2018Waste Fair\u2019, which is aimed at producers, promoting some products\u2019 appreciation, such as those that the end customers do not value, nor do they want to buy, such as fruit that is too small or defective. We brought the Alcoba\u00e7a\u2019s Apple producers &#8211; Narcfrutas, Cooperfrutas, Frutalvor, Campotec and Lusofruta &#8211; together with our industrial partner, Mendes &amp; Gon\u00e7alves, and, thus, the proposal of a unique and certified Apple Vinegar was born<\/em>\u201d.\r\n\r\n\u201c<em>We already have a very old partnership with MC, for supplying apples from Alcoba\u00e7a, and this project arises from the joint work of several producers as a way of solving the problem of apples that would result in food waste. Alcoba\u00e7a Apple Vinegar is a way of helping the planet, adding value to these apples, by turning them into a product\u201d<\/em>, says Jorge Soares, Campotec Administrator.\r\n\r\nContinente has been developing other initiatives that prevent tonnes of food being wasted, while offering products that preserve excellent consumption conditions, at a more accessible price for the consumer. Examples are the devaluation of the RRP on products that are close to reaching their expiry date, being identified with pink labels, and the establishment of partnerships with \u2018Too Good to Go\u2019, for instance, through which customers can access a basket of products, the \u2018Magic Box\u2019, at 1\/3 of the usual sale price.\r\n\r\nAnother example is the Zer0% Waste boxes, through which Continente offers 5kg baskets of fruit and vegetables that are close to exceeding the optimum consumption point, on sale for just \u20ac0.50\/kg.\r\n\r\nContinente also transforms PGI apples and pears\u2019 production surplus into dehydrated fruit snacks, or natural juices, which only contain squeezed fruit, without any added sugar or water.\r\n\r\nThe reuse and redistribution of food that preserves excellent consumption conditions, through donations of food surpluses to social solidarity and animal support institutions, is part of the stores\u2019 daily activities.
