At 480g, it sells for \u20ac3.95, but it has a 20% off discounted price until April 18<\/b><b>th<\/b><b> (\u20ac3.16) and is made with the leftovers generated in the production of sausages and smoked meats, reusing products that are not marketable, but come from high quality raw materials.\r\n\r\n<\/b><iframe title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4LJbzCGBpv0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The smoked meat surpluses &#8211; ham and chorizo \u200b\u200b- are products that do not fit into any specific fixed weight sale category or that result from breaks in the production process and therefore cannot be sold on commercial surfaces. However, by reusing surplus from the meat industry, producers \u2018P\u00e3o de Gimonde\u2019 (Bragan\u00e7a) and \u2018Salsicharia da Gardunha\u2019 (Fund\u00e3o) \u2013 both members of the Continente Producers Club \u2013, developed the recipe and bake these pastries that are for sale on Continente, thus fighting food waste. In order to reduce this product\u2019s carbon footprint as much as possible, Continente also buys the cereals (flour) used in the pastry from nearby suppliers (most of which are about five kilometres away).<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Food Waste is a central topic on Continente\u2019s sustainability agenda. The Continente Producers Club has, also, been promoting partnerships with national producers that allow for waste repurposing, one of the examples being the Smoked Meat \u2018Folar\u2019 (Portuguese Easter bread), which is born from the partnership between \u2018P\u00e3o de Gimonde\u2019 and \u2018Salsicharia da Gardunha\u2019, resulting in a circular economy product<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d, explains Ondina Afonso, President of the Continente Producers Club.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Smoked Meat \u2018Folar\u2019 (Portuguese Easter bread) comes as a response to the challenge launched by the Continente Producers Club, using a by-product of the meat industry in the development of an innovative product that reminds the consumer of what is most traditional in Tr\u00e1s-os-Montes. Produced with traditional, light and fluffy \u2018folar\u2019 pastry, the meat is spread inside, in smaller pieces, which make its flavour more harmonious and the dough even lighter.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to these \u2018folares\u2019 (Portuguese Easter bread) made with meat surpluses, Continente also has other varieties of this pastry for sale, in a total of 12 different varieties, between sweet and savoury ones, namely \u2018chocolate chips\u2019, \u2018nuts and candied fruit\u2019, \u2018coconut and guava\u2019, \u2018pumpkin, coconut and walnuts\u2019, \u2018cinnamon\u2019, \u2018egg\u2019, \u2018plain\u2019 (without egg), \u2018egg and almond cream\u2019, \u2018coconut and guava\u2019, \u2018chocolate and hazelnut\u2019, \u2018meat\u2019 and \u2018bacon, ham and chorizo\u2019, with prices ranging from \u20ac1.99 to \u20ac6.79.
